Scholarships & Bursaries
There are two deadlines each year to apply for scholarships; May 1st and October 1st annually. The application will be available six weeks prior to each deadline and closes at 11:59pm on the deadline date.
ALL scholarship applications must be submitted though the online application form. Paper applications will not be accepted and only applications submitted through the website will be considered for a scholarship. This does not apply to the Gabriel Dumont College Graduate Student Bursary which still must be submitted as a paper application.

The Gabriel Dumont Institute has been administering scholarships for Saskatchewan’s Métis since the early 1980s through the Gabriel Dumont Scholarship Foundation.
Scholarships are awarded to Métis students who are Saskatchewan residents and are registered as full-time students at an accredited post-secondary institution.
The programs are intended to recognize leadership, academic ability, financial need, and community involvement of students who meet the eligibility criteria for any or all scholarship programs.
The scholarship fund is based on a $2.5 million capital investment and scholarships are awarded on the interest earned on the fund’s principle and through individual corporate partnership donations.
Award decisions are made by a scholarship trustee and selection committee comprised of five members; three members are selected from within the institute while two members are external appointees from the Métis community.
GDI welcomes the opportunity to build partnerships with corporate and independent businesses, and has the potential for matching GDI-partner contributions. Contact the Scholarship Coordinator for more information at scholarships@gdi.gdins.org.

The Adult Basic Education Scholarship program is open to Métis students who demonstrate leadership, academic achievement, financial need, and community involvement while pursuing ABE Level 3 or Level 4 accreditation.
The Affinity Credit Union Scholarship is open to full-time students in the Saskatchewan Urban Native Teachers Education Program (SUNTEP). Applicatnts must be Métis residents of Saskatchean who demonstrate leadership, high academic achievment, financial need and community involvement. At least one scholarship from each of the Saskatoo, Prince Albert and Regina programs will receive this award.

Open to Métis residents of Saskatchewan studying full-time at an accredited post-secondary institution pursing a degree, diploma, certificate in various programs and areas of study.
Priority will be given to applicants attending an accredited post-secondary institute in Saskatchewan.
Deadline: May 1 and Oct. 1 annually.
The Napoleon LaFontaine Economic Development Scholarship Program is open to Métis students pursuing full-time education and training in academic studies that lead toward their social, cultural, and economic development.
Currently Napoleon LaFontaine scholarships are awarded as:
- Entrance scholarships
- Undergraduate scholarships
- Graduate scholarships
- Graduation scholarships
- Loan remission scholarships
- Special scholarships
Items required for these scholarships:
- A copy of your valid Saskatchewan health card
- A personal photo
- Enrollment confirmation or acceptance letter
- 50 word personal biography
- 2 sentences on your career goals
Deadline: May 1 and Oct. 1 annually
The Nutrien – GDI Scholarship is open to Métis students who demonstrate leadership, academic achievement, financial need and community involvement and are enrolled in an accredited post-secondary institution pursuing a degree, diploma, certificate, or apprentice/journey level in:
- Trades
- Business Administration
- Commerce
- Computer Science
- Any other field that relates to the potash industry
Priority will be given to students who identify an interest in employment with Nurtien.
Matching funds for this program made possible by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Advanced Education through the Saskatchewan Innovation and Opportunity Scholarship Program.
Deadline: May 1 and Oct. 1 annually
Open to Métis residents of Saskatchewan studying full-time at an accredited post-secondary institution pursing a degree, diploma, certificate in various programs and areas of study.
Priority will be given to applicants attending an accredited post-secondary institute in Saskatchewan.
Deadline: October 1st
1 scholarship of $1,500 will be awarded.
The Redhead – GDI Scholarship is open to Métis students pursuing certification in the Dumont Technical Institute (DTI) Heavy Equipment and Truck and Transport Technician Program. Preference will be given to Redhead Equipment employees.
Deadline: May 1 and Oct. 1 annually.
The Gabriel Dumont Institute has been granted funds from the Ministry of Advance Education through the Saskatchewan Innovation and Opportunity Scholarship Program in order to provide targeted scholarships to students in the following programs:
- Saskatchewan Urban Native Teacher Education Program
- Gabriel Dumont College
- Dumont Technical Institute Skills and Trades Programs
Priority areas, as per GDI’s strategic plan, include trades, business, health, transportation, and university. Priority will be given to applicants who demonstrate leadership, academic achievement, financial need, and community involvement.

The SaskEnergy Incorporated Scholarship Program is open to full-time, Métis students who demonstrate leadership, academic achievement, financial need, and community involvement while pursuing post secondary accreditation in one of the following:
- Engineering
- Business administration/commerce
- Computer science
- Other field of study related to SaskEnergy
Deadline: October 1st
To assist Métis students pursuing accreditation related to employment opportunities with SaskGaming.
Open to Métis students in the Dumont Technical Office Administration program.
Deadline: May 1 and Oct. 1 annually.
The SaskTel Métis Scholarship is open to full-time, Métis students who demonstrate leadership, academic achievement, financial need, and community involvement while pursuing post secondary accreditation in one of the following:
- Engineering (electrical, electronic, or telecommunications)
- Business administration/commerce
- Computer science
- Other field of study related to SaskTel
Deadline: May 1st and October 1st annually.
To assist full-time Métis students pursuing a degree, diploma, or certificate in various programs and areas of study.
The funding for this scholarship will be generated from the royalty payments for the upcoming book publications, Métis Rising, co-authored and edited by Dr. Yvonne Boyer and Professor Larry Chartrand.
Open to Métis residents of Saskatchewan studying full-time at an accredited post-secondary institution pursing a degree, diploma, certificate in various programs and areas of study.
Priority will be given to applicants attending an accredited post-secondary institute in Saskatchewan.
The GDC Graduate Student Bursary is currently unavailable and applications are not being accepted at this time
The purpose of the GDC Graduate Student Bursary Program is to provide financial assistance and encourage Saskatchewan Métis to pursue full time graduate studies and conduct research in fields related to Métis people. It was developed to increase Métis employment in Saskatchewan and internally at Gabriel Dumont Institute.
The GDC Graduate Student Bursary is open to Métis students who are pursuing full-time academics at the Post-Graduate level, Master’s or Doctorate.
Deadline: Ongoing during the program year.
The GDI-FCC Aboriginal Student Empowerment Fund is open to students attending the Office Administration Program at Dumont Technical Institute in Regina. This bursary aims to provide support for basic needs such as bus pass, childcare, rent, groceries, etc., so that students can focus on their education and worry less about finances.
To apply for this scholarship, students must meet with their Instructor, Councillor, or Program Coordinator to discuss their need for the funds and request an application form.
