Scholarships and Bursaries FAQ

As of January 1st, 2014, all scholarship applications must be submitted though the online application form. Paper applications will no longer be accepted and only applications submitted through the website will be considered for a scholarship.  This does not apply to the Gabriel Dumont College Graduate Student Bursary which still must be submitted as a paper application.

How do I apply for a scholarship?

All scholarships must be applied for through the online scholarship application form, apply now.

Am I eligible for a scholarship through GDI?

If you are Métis and a resident of Saskatchewan pursuing post-secondary education, you may be eligible for a scholarship through the Gabriel Dumont Scholarship Foundation. Please visit our scholarship information page for a list of eligibility criteria.

Do I have to be a Métis citizen of Saskatchewan to be eligible?

Yes. At this time, all GDI scholarships are only open to Saskatchewan residents who identify as Métis.

Do I need to fill out an application for each scholarship I apply for?

No. You only need to fill out one application for all scholarships you are applying for. On the application form there is a spot to check the scholarships you wish to apply for.

Do I need to send original transcripts?

Yes. Original transcripts from your most recent year of study must be sent directly to the Scholarship Coordinator. Unofficial transcripts and transcripts not received in a sealed envelop from the institution will not be accepted.

Can I send in a paper application form?

What are the application deadlines?

May 1st and October 1st of each year.

How early can I apply?

The online application will open three months prior to the application deadline. You can apply for scholarships any time within the three month window.

Should I apply for all scholarships even if I’m not eligible?

Checking scholarship that you are not eligible for is not recommended. Each scholarship has its own required documents and you may end up doing additional assignments for scholarships you won’t be considered for. Eligibility requirements are listed under each scholarship’s information tab.

I’m currently in high school, am I eligible for any scholarships?

High school students are only eligible for a scholarship if they have been accepted to an accredited post-secondary institution. If you are awarded a scholarship, you will not receive your award until you are actively in your program.

What is the difference between a scholarship and a bursary?

With the exception of the Napoleon Lafontaine Graduate Scholarship, and the GDI Training & Employment Scholarship (open to students in Adult Basic Education Levels 3 & 4), scholarships are open to Métis students pursing post-secondary education at an accredited institution up to the undergraduate level. The Gabriel Dumont College Graduate Student Bursary is open to Métis graduate students pursing education at the Master’s or Doctorate level.

How do I apply for a bursary?

The Gabriel Dumont College Graduate Student Bursary must be submitted using the paper application found here.

I’ve already received a scholarship from GDI. Can I apply again?

Some scholarships have a maximum number of consecutive or non-consecutive awards you can receive. If you’ve not exceeded the maximum, you are eligible to continue applying for scholarships.

Can I receive more than one scholarship in one deadline?

Depending on your program, you may be eligible for and could possibly receive more than one scholarship.

How do I know if my application was received?

You will receive a confirmation email that your application was received. If you do not receive an email, please contact the Scholarship Coordinator, scholarships@gdi.gdins.org.

I missed the deadline, will you still accept my application?

No. Once the deadline has passed, the online application will be closed and no longer available on the website.

How are scholarship recipients selected?

The Gabriel Dumont Scholarship Foundation selection committee meets twice per year to award scholarships.

When will I know if I was awarded a scholarship?

Please allow up to eight weeks past the deadline for a letter regarding your application.

How will I receive my scholarship money?

All scholarship information will be corresponded to you by general mail or email. Please ensure we have your correct and up-to-date contact information at all times.

I’ve moved, who do I notify of my new address?

Please notify the Scholarship Coordinator of an address change as soon as possible by email, scholarships@gdi.gdins.org.

What if I withdraw from my program after receiving a scholarship?

Students who withdraw from a program in the academic period for which they received a scholarship may be required to repay all or a portion of the scholarship they received.
