On April 5th and 6th, Gabriel Dumont Institute hosted two more Métis Capote workshops with Suzan Lagrove-Coulliard in Saskatoon. The capote is hand-sewn in the blanket stitch, which is accessible even for beginners. The coat is made with a Hudson Bay blanket popular during the fur trade, turned into a knee-length coat with a hood closed with a Métis sash. Suzan has been sewing and teaching capotes for 30+ years and has helped preserve this piece of Métis history and culture. “I love the creativity part. I worked for the Hudson Bay Company for 36 years” Suzan says, “Everybody starts with a blanket, but it’s endless possibilities.” GDI Press is working on a book about the Métis capote, so keep an eye out for more news on that soon!
CBC Saskatoon’s Theresa Kliem caught up with Suzan to chat about the history of the Métis Capote, listen here.
