Northern Saskatchewan Indigenous Teacher Education Program (NSITEP) is a four-year Bachelor of Education Degree program based in Air Ronge. NSITEP was created in 2019 in partnership with Gabriel Dumont Institute (GDI), the University of Regina (U of R), and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB).

PROGRAM DETAILS

• GDI has been working with the Province’s Universities for the past 40 years to train over 1,400 Indigenous teachers whose credentials are recognized across Canada. To address the Teacher shortage in Northern Saskatchewan, GDI, U of R, and the LLRIB are proud to announce they partnered to deliver a Northern Saskatchewan Indigenous Teacher Education Program
• NSITEP is a four-year fully accredited Bachelor of Education Degree Program with an emphasis on Northern Indigenous Culture, language, and land-based instruction.
• NSITEP emphasizes community relationships and strives to ensure the four-year degree experience provides face-to-face instruction and on-site support for students.
• Métis and First Nation applicants are given priority for seats in the program, and other applicants will be placed on a waitlist and notified if seats become in available.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

• Grade 12 with a 70% average in approved courses.
• Adult or special admission applicants must be 21 years of age or older, and an Adult 12 is preferred.
• As a condition of field placements in schools, you will be required to provide a police record check with a vulnerable sector search to NSITEP. Not all criminal convictions will prevent you from teaching but must be disclosed. If you have any questions as to whether your police record check will prevent you from receiving teacher certification you should contact Saskatchewan Professional Teachers Regulatory Board (SPTRB) at 306-352-2230 or 1-844-690-9741.
• All applicants will be interviewed by a screening committee prior to acceptance into the program.

Step 3: Request for Transcripts
Request your high school transcripts from the Ministry of Education to be sent directly to the University of Regina at: https://www.k12.gov.sk.ca/etranscript/requiredInformation.jsp

Request any other post-secondary education transcripts from the institution that you had previously attended and have that institution send them directly to U of R at: University of Saskatchewan Grades and Transcripts, SaskPolyTech Grades and Transcripts or from your previous post-secondary education institution.

• Early admission application deadline: March 15, 2024
• General intake application deadline: May 1, 2024

*Some late applications may be accepted if spaces are still available.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

Tuition, books, and income support may be available to qualified Métis and First Nation applicants. We encourage all applicants to apply for funding through the various sources below:

• Métis applicants should make an appointment with a GDI Training & Employment Counselor who can discuss their funding options at 1 (877) 488-6888
• Lac La Ronge Indian Band Members should contact the LLRIB Post-Secondary Education Office at (306) 425-4938 and complete the LLRIB Post-Secondary Student Support Program Application Form
• All other First Nation Band Members should contact their respective Post-Secondary Education offices to inquire about funding opportunities
• Applicants can also apply for Canada Student loans if eligible online at Canada Student Grant for Full-Time Students
• Housing is limited, but applications are available on request.
