“I chose DTI because I am a proud MN—S citizen with family roots in Meadow Lake, SK. DTI provides an environment where I feel accepted, understood, and can connect with my culture”

Dumont Technical Institute Student

Michael Ross is a proud Métis Nation—Saskatchewan (MN—S) citizen, so he chose Dumont Technical Institute (DTI) to study at a school where he felt understood and affirmed his connection to his culture. He is completing his first year of the Mental Health & Wellness Diploma in Meadow Lake, including a recent field placement in the local MN—S office as a mental health case worker.

Michael is passionate about helping youth with mental health and addictions issues, and he says, “I hope to be a resource to my community and the surrounding communities in combating the addiction crisis and educating youth prior to high-risk behavior.” After graduation, he will be looking to begin his new career as a therapist, counselor, or motivational speaker in schools speaking directly to youth.

Native Social Work program class of 1988

Michael first heard about DTI because his mom graduated from the Institute’s Native Social Work program in 1988, and her plaque for academic excellence hangs on the wall in his family home. He is following in her footsteps as a dedicated student who has excelled academically and earned the respect and trust of faculty and peers alike. Michael has been nominated as the “unofficial” class president and entrusted with the treasurer duties for his class’s graduation fundraising efforts.

In May 2024, Michael received the prestigious Order of Gabriel Dumont Bronze Medal, recognizing his leadership, community service, cultural initiatives, and overall academic performance. Jennifer Jones, DTI Faculty, nominated him for the award, and she writes, “He is the first to offer a helping hand to anyone in need, taking the initiative to organize any effort and ensure that everyone is treated with dignity, respect and fairness.”

Michael has one more year of school to complete with DTI, and we are excited to see where he goes next!
