GDI Training & Employment Client Program: Individual Sponsorship Program Education: Denturist Technology Diploma Graduate |
“It is crucial to have a Métis presence in post-secondary to allow students to feel comfortable and confident that they have the resources to be successful, which is why it is GDI is important for Métis people.”
Kelsey Reiber became a Gabriel Dumont Institute (GDI) Training & Employment client in September 2018. The GDI individual sponsorship program she accessed helped her focus all of her efforts on completing the Denturist Technology Program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) in Edmonton, Alberta. In summer 2021, Kelsey graduated from the program with a diploma in Denturist Technology. She credits her employment counsellor, Randi Ross for always looking out for her and having amazing communication. “My post-secondary experience was greater than I could have imagined, and I owe a lot of that to Randi, and GDI for all they have done for me in the past three years,” said Kelsey.
After graduation, Kelsey secured employment as a Denturist at Saskatoon Denture Clinic. What she enjoys most about the position is getting to do what she’s always wanted, create smiles. A typical day for her includes consultations, exams, and being responsible for the needs of her patients ensuring that they get the necessary care to make them feel comfortable. Her future goals within the industry are to become a partner at a Denture Clinic. “I have always admired the idea of doing what you love while being your own boss and being a Denturist allows you to do this. I have a lot of people in my family who have taken on ownership roles and so I have seen the hard work it takes and can appreciate it,” stated Kelsey.
Kelsey believes it is crucial to have a Métis presence in post-secondary to allow students to feel comfortable and confident that they have the resources to be successful, which is why it is GDI is important for Métis people. Her advice to future students and clients is, “Always keep the end in mind. Times can get tough and school can become overwhelming, but with education, it is always worth it!”
