Dumont Technical Institute Graduate

Kimberly Dennett, a Métis student from Beauval, found her calling in mental health thanks to the Gabriel Dumont Institute’s Training and Employment Services.

Before GDI, Kimberly was stuck in a part-time job with no growth. “I had half-time unsatisfactory work with no room to grow,” she shared. However, a Mental Health and Wellness advertisement sparked her interest, leading her to contact her GDI local office in Beauval for funding options.

Kimberly’s journey with GDI was transformative. Her advisor, Marina, offered exceptional support, guiding her through applications and answering all her questions. “Marina… was a tremendous support,” Kimberly noted. GDI also provided crucial financial aid, covering her tuition, books, and a training allowance during her studies.

Now educated, Kimberly is eager to work. Her goal is to help those with mental health and substance use issues, especially in Indigenous communities and with youth. She recognizes the great need for mental health workers across Saskatchewan. “I would work where the need is greatest, and there is no shortage of that,” she affirms.

Kimberly highly recommends GDI to other Métis individuals: “I would advise them to go back to school and to go see GDI for guidance.” She emphasizes GDI’s vital role, stating, “Without GDI in our communities, a lot of people wouldn’t go back to school.”

Kimberly’s experience was overwhelmingly positive. “I had such an awesome experience with GDI… We are very lucky to have this service,” she concluded. Her story powerfully illustrates how GDI empowers Métis individuals to achieve their career goals and contribute to their communities in the best ways possible
