“I am eternally grateful for the support of GDI; the journey felt a lot easier knowing I had them behind me.”

Indigenous Apprenticeship Program - Journeyperson Electrician

Travis became a Gabriel Dumont Institute (GDI) Training & Employment client in 2021 for support as he transitions through the levels of apprenticeship. As part of the Indigenous Apprenticeship Program, Travis worked with Employment Counsellor Randi Ross to complete his last level of apprenticeship as an electrical apprentice.

GDI worked with Travis’s employer and created a partnership for the last few months of his apprenticeship. He also completed his fourth level of technical training during the COVID-19 pandemic, therefore having to finish school online. GDI was able to provide Travis with additional resources and access to a laptop to continue his studies. “I am eternally grateful for the support of GDI; the journey felt a lot easier knowing I had them behind me,” said Travis.

With plenty of hard work and perseverance, Travis became a Journeyperson Red Seal Electrician on February 26, 2021. In his day-to-day position, he enjoys the variety of tasks, troubleshooting, and all the challenges that come with increased responsibility. His future goals in the industry are to get his contractor license and start his own company.

Travis’s advice for future apprenticeship clients is to “be transparent with your employment counsellor; they will do anything to help you in your journey! See it through until the end.” He credits his employment counsellor for her clear communication and believes she went the extra mile.
