A case of COVID-19 within the Executive of the Métis Nation—Saskatchewan demonstrates the ease of transmission of the virus and the need to take precautions seriously.

On September 18, 2020, Glen McCallum, President of the Métis Nation-Saskatchewan, tested positive for COVID-19, learning of the results while at a meeting with other Métis officials in Waskesiu at the Hawood Inn. President McCallum immediately left the meeting, and attendees were later informed of the positive result, at which time the gathering was disbanded. Anyone with close contact with President McCallum was advised to self-isolate, monitor for symptoms, and get tested if they displayed symptoms.

Since March 2020, when the COVID reality hit the province, GDI has implemented a number of safety precautions at all our locations in an effort to mitigate the spread of the virus. As we move into the fall the numbers are rising provincially and forecasts expect case numbers will continue to increase. Our duty to one another and our community is to do all we can to prevent the spread of the virus.

At GDI it is now standard that masks are worn in all common spaces and screening occurs at all facilities.

Let’s continue to take every precaution possible to ensure the safety of our community, which includes the Elders, youth, and families within each of our circles of contact.
