Gabriel Dumont Institute Training and Employment was established in 2006 to assist Saskatchewan’s Métis looking to improve their educational and employment outcomes.

Gabriel Dumont Institute Training and Employment aims to create a strong link between the training and sustained employment of Métis people.

Programs are based on labour market needs and trends, and clients may receive financial support through help with tuition, living allowances, and employer subsidies where eligible.

There are GDI Training and Employment sites in 11 communities across the province. Each service delivery site is staffed by employment counselors who provide services to our Métis clients in their home communities.

GDI Training and Employment also includes staff travel to outlying area communities to make sure that all Métis people have reasonable access.

ABORIGINAL SKILLS AND EMPLOYMENT TRAINING STRATEGY

Funding for GDI Training and Employment programs is provided through the Aboriginal Skills and Employment Training Strategy.

In 2010, GDI signed the new ASETS for a five-year term, and continues to empower the Métis people of Saskatchewan by improving their educational and employment futures.

ASETS focuses on three main priorities:

1. Support for demand-driven skills development;
2. Fostering partnerships with the private sector and the provinces and territories; and
3. Placing emphasis on accountability and results.

Under this strategy, Aboriginal agreement holders design and deliver employment-based programs and services best suited to the unique needs of their clients.
