The Gabriel Dumont Institute Métis Culture and Heritage Department, which includes Gabriel Dumont Institute Press, is the world’s only comprehensive Métis-specific book publisher, curriculum development unit, museum, and cultural resource producer.
The Department has produced 325 innovative and culturally affirming Métis-specific resources, which have strengthened and preserved the Métis people’s cultural legacy.
The Métis Culture and Heritage Department’s cultural program is community-based and is made possible through the invaluable contributions of Métis Elders, cultural knowledge keepers, authors, illustrators, musicians, and Michif speakers and translators.
Gabriel Dumont Institute Press publishes Métis authors and illustrators and/or themes in a wide range of genres—illustrated children’s books, graphic novels, prose and poetry books, juvenile and adult non-fiction trade, and academic books. Our eclectic Métis-centered books promote literacy and Métis history and culture for young readers. They also ensure the intergenerational transmission of Métis history, culture, and worldview. Through this focus, the Institute is also able to produce Michif-language resources for the K-12 system and the Métis community.
The Press has had a great deal of success in publishing books and has received a great deal of critical acclaim, winning numerous awards.
